Cutting Machine Operator – Afternoons

Shift: Afternoons (4:00pm – 12:30am)

Position Summary:   The primary responsibility of this position is to lead, coordinate, and schedule the daily activities of the Cutting Department.  You will be responsible for increasing production efficiencies and for decreasing the amount of scrap generated through enhanced material utilization processes.  Also responsible for maintaining quality and safety within the Cutting Department.

 Responsibilities:

  • Ensure department operates in a timely and efficient manner
  • Support the production requirements of each department and shift
  • Meet workload requirements within Company policy and procedure
  • Have discipline, security, and control in place to meet and maintain a safe workplace
  • Ensure equipment operates within standards.
  • Supervise, coordinate and schedule daily activities for staff.
  • Complete documentation requirements (computer logging of material and labor).
  • Resolve work problems and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality
  • Have training requirements identified and completed
  • Train staff in duties, safety procedures and company policies
  • Have trained staff meet and work to job requirements with back up for those positions (specifically Lead Hand positions)
  • Have open communications with employees with corrective action taken as required
  • Lead 5S implementation
  • Identify staffing concerns
  • Identify any technical concerns as in design, drawings and/or equipment
  • Examine sketches, samples, and specifications of designs and to make recommendations to achieve maximum material utilizations
  • Problem solve to increase material utilization
  • Operate technical cutting machines – Set-up and digitize, marker making, plotting and pattern design
  • Maintain equipment with minor repairs as needed and report major breakdowns to Plant Manager
  • Have employees work to BOM and drawing requirements
  • Have daily, weekly, and monthly machine checks completed
  • Avoid overproducing by ensuring first off is completed, reviewed, and signed off before start of production
  • Review all BOM’s and Work Order prior to starting production to ensure correct information
  • Ensure all YBINS are current and up to date – investigate reason and resolve any inventory issues in a timely manner
  • Have all employees work to the Occupation, Health, Safety and OSHA Act along with Company Plant Rules
  • Ensure housekeeping is orderly and maintained
  • Report and record all accidents and incidents
  • To know and work to quality standards
  • Identify quality concerns to Plant Manager
  • Assist in the implementation of the ISO 9001 program including corrective actions as required
  • Meet on time delivery dates relating to Plant production
  • Review and ensure all orders in work center meet agreed upon dates
  • Meet weekly production, quality, and efficiency targets
  • Participate on continuous improvement projects
  • Participate on technical problem solving
  • Recommend cost cutting ideas regards material utilization
  • Recommend equipment lay out improvements within the department
  • Assist implement 5S culture
  • Improve and lead plant culture – ensure all employees are working safely
  • Ensure staff understands and completes 5S audits
  • Ensure all training sessions are documented and signed off
  • Ensure all Communication Boards are maintained accurately and timely
  • Develop and report weekly re-cuts with root cause solutions
  • Create pre-set standards for all high usage and repeat fabrics
  • Create performance indicators to monitor cutting and spreading performance
  • Ensure plant variance remains at budget monthly

Indicate the minimum level of formal Education Required:                               

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Training capabilities
  • Ability to lead and direct others
  • Able to assign and schedule workload
  • Textile related experience an asset
  • Ability to read drawings and pattern making
  • Strong knowledge of measurement
  • Knowledge of 5S and other Lean techniques
  • Technical knowledge of computerized cutting machines
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment

Requirements:

  • This position requires standing for long periods of time
  • This position requires some manually lifting up to 25 pounds
  • Previous experience with textiles and/or manufactured fabric products would be an asset
